The Lotus Flower in Vietnamese Life
From North to South Viet Nam, the lotus flower is found everywhere, familiar and beloved by all Vietnamese people, of all social classes and ages.
For generations, the lotus flower has been considered a symbol of resilience, nobility, and purity. In the Vietnamese psyche, the lotus is seen as the quintessential flower of Vietnam, representing the spirit, identity, and soul of the Vietnamese people. Every summer, from the Red River Delta to the Mekong Delta, lotus ponds bloom profusely in the pure morning light.
The stem rises from the mud, supporting the lotus seed pod that rises high above the water's surface. The lotus flower possesses both fragrance and beauty, but its scent is not overpowering, rather gentle. Its color is discreet, subtle, and delicate, dispelling the oppressive heat of summer.

Lotus
The formation of the lotus follows the law of cause and effect and reincarnation. Therefore, it symbolizes mystical and enchanting beauty, closely associated with the Vietnamese people, from the creation of heaven and earth. The One Pillar Pagoda, originally named Lien Hoa Dai, meaning lotus flower platform, was built in the 11th century. Shaped like a lotus flower rising from a lake, it is considered the most distinctive symbol of the fusion of Buddhist beliefs and Vietnamese folk culture.
Throughout history, the lotus has not only been a familiar flower in daily life, but also an irreplaceable spiritual language of the Vietnamese people. It embodies profound philosophical and humanistic meanings. Born from mud, blooming from mud, yet its pure petals remain untainted, retaining their pristine beauty, conveying a message of resilience in the face of adversity and the noble character that humanity always strives for. Beyond its beauty and meaning, the lotus is present in every aspect of Vietnamese life.
Lotus seeds are used in cuisine and medicine; lotus roots are a familiar dish on the feast table; lotus leaves wrap rustic gifts; lotus stamens and calyxes linger, their fragrance filling teapots, opening up stories of inner peace and moments of profound tranquility. The lotus has become deeply ingrained in Vietnamese culture; no other flower possesses such a vibrant presence in Vietnamese life, cuisine, poetry, painting, and spirituality. In this new era, as the role of traditional culture is increasingly valued for sustainable national development, the lotus has been given a new mission: becoming an ambassador of Vietnamese identity.
Lotus festivals are increasingly organized to honor the entire cultural ecosystem of the lotus plant. From the traditional Bach Diep lotus tea-making craft to lotus silk, lotus cuisine, lotus handicrafts, and lotus branding, these elements are linked to ecotourism areas, creating unique highlights that attract numerous tourists and enrich the cultural and economic value of the locality. Thanks to this, the unique values of the Vietnamese lotus are increasingly appreciated and spread, not only domestically but also internationally, becoming a flower symbolizing the resilient, enduring, and pure beauty of the Vietnamese people and culture.
